Celebrating our athletes’ successes in 2016

The 2016 Sports Awards were held yesterday evening at the University Club. It was a fantastic event with a number of athletes representing many different sports clubs receiving accolades. The signature award, the Commonwealth Bank University of Tasmania Sports Person of the Year went to the very deserving Georgia Nesbitt for her incredible achievements in rowing this past year.

The ever popular Blues Awards saw a strong showing from the athletics and rowing athletes with 12 winners. The Sports Council awards were given to those who’ve put in a tremendous effort with their sports clubs while the Tasmania University Dive Club won Sports Club of the Year.

Special guest for the evening was Meaghan Volker, fresh from her stint competing at the Olympics in Rio. She gave an insightful interview to Mel Jeliff, Sports Development Officer at the University. This year’s North vs South competition was hotly contested with the South just edging their Northern counterparts, winning 6 of the 11 events that were held. 2016 saw the University of Tasmania enjoying its most successful year ever at the University Games and a number of teams and athletes received awards for their successes. Our medal haul of 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze resulted in the University of Tasmania finishing 6th of 13 universities on an overall per capita basis.

Professor David Sadler, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students and Education) then took to the stage to hand out the Sports Scholarship awards and spoke about the fantastic contributions made by sports people to the University and the Australian sports scene as a whole.
