Celebrating sporting achievements at the University of Tasmania

On Tuesday the 14th of November, the Tasmania University Union in conjunction with the University of Tasmania held their annual Sports Awards Night. The evening was a great success with some of Tasmania’s finest athletes receiving accolades for their performances over the past 12 months. The Sports Person of the Year Award went to ALex Lack for his achievements in the cycling world.

Full and Half Blues were awarded to those athletes who have achieved fantastic successes in their chosen sports this year and it was great to see some new sports represented during the presentation. The TUU Sports Council Awards were also presented to those behind the scenes who work tirelessly for their sporting clubs and their members. The decision on Sports Club of the Year was too tough to decide so two clubs were given the award, Tasmania University Dive Club and Tasmania University Boat Club.

Guest speakers on the night included Paul Bloomfield, Director of Student Life and Stephanie Taylor, Executive Director of Student Experience. They presented awards for Sports Scholarships as well as discussing the University’s success at the Uni Games this year. Rising women’s AFL star Loveth Ochayi and former Wallaby Luke Burgess were interviewed by Jarrod Stephens, the Sport, Fitness and Recreation Team Leader.

Towards the end of the evening, Stephanie Taylor announced the launch of the University of Tasmania Sports Fund, which is designed to support student-athletes in their academic and sporting endeavours. We look forward to next year’s event where new champions will be crowned and hopefully our mens Futsal team can finally win that coveted Gold at the Southern Uni Games.

See below for a full rundown of the winners.
