Sports Club Feature: University Devils Gridiron Club
Published 12 August 2019
The University Devils Gridiron Club was founded in 2014-2015 when the Gridiron returned to Tasmania after a 14 year sabbatical. The Devils were a foundation club. The league and the Devils are now entering the 6th year of competition.
The Devils started as the under dog for the first few years of its existence. With persistence and development the Devils were crowned 2017-2018 Tasmania State Gridiron Champions by winning the 4th Tiger Bowl in overtime 20-14. The Devils have also produced some stand out players league wide. In 2017-2018 our Middle Linebacker Brody Fussell was crowned league MVP. In 2018-2019 our quarter back Joel Simms won the league MVP. The Devils were semi finalists last year and are eager to return to the Tiger Bowl this year.
The game is for all shapes and sizes. No experience needed. We encourage larger men to play but all are welcome! Trainings are Tuesday and Thursday each week at 6pm with games on Saturday’s generally at 2pm but with some games also on Sundays. Season starts in Early November and Tiger Bowl is generally last Saturday in February. For those new to the game the club can generally provide equipment at a low cost rental with discounts on both registration and equipment use for university students and payment plans for fees by instalments are negotiable.
